On Thursday, Feb. 27, Delta Theta Chapter was proud to co-host with TCU’s Beta Alpha Chapter
“2020 Year of the Nurse and the Midwife.” The esteemed guest speaker was Cynthia Vlasich, MBA, BSN, RN, FAAN, the former Director of Global Initiatives, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and now a nursing career consultant. UTA’s Hereford University Center in the Carlisle Suite was the site of the dinner meeting. Approximately 30 Sigma chapter members from Delta Theta, Beta Alpha, Baylor’s Eta Gamma, and TWU’s Beta Beta attended.
Cynthia discussed the designation of 2020 by the World Health Organization as the “Year of the Nurse and Midwife,” honoring the 200th birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale. Some very interesting information shared by Cynthia with the audience:
- Nurses & Midwives alone comprise almost 50% of the world’s healthcare workforce
- Status of the World’s Midwives reports were done in 2011, 2014, and another due this year
- A report on the Status of the Worlds Nurses has never been done before
- 50% of WHO Member States report less than 3 nursing and midwifery personnel per 1000 population, and about 25% report to have less than 1 per 1000 population.
She encouraged those in attendance to expect the State of the World’s Nursing Report, an 80-page written document, released on April 7, which was World Health Day. The report includes individual country profiles.

Before Cynthia’s presentation, members enjoyed a delicious BBQ dinner catered by Colter’s Texas BBQ. UTACONHI nursing student organization leaders volunteered with registration and hospitality.
